1.2 Types of Licenses

Section 1.1 outlines that Amateur radio is a hobby and that some types of communication are prohibited under an amateur license.
There are many different types of licenses, because there are different kinds of communication. The different kinds of communication have different conditions. Some of these types of licenses are:

  • Aircraft
  • Amateur
  • Broadcasting
  • Land Mobile
  • Scientific

For a full list, consult the ACMA Apparatus licensing paper.
The Radiocommunications Act 1992 governs all radio communications in Australia in broad general terms. Detailled knowledge is not required to pass the exam, however, it would be remiss to say it is unimportant.
The Radiocommunications Regulations Act 1993 describes more specific aspects of radio communications that are relevant to amateurs. Again, detailled knowledge is not required to pass the regulations exam. It outlines organisations responsible for administering amateur radio, definitions used in legislation and other details.
The Radiocommunications Licence Conditions (Amateur Service Determination No.1 of 1997) (dubbed the "LCDs"). The LCDs describes the privileges of amateur licensing using technical terms and is very specific regarding the details it contains. This is the most important document to bear in mind when discussing regulations, and you can be tested in great detail for a regulations exam.
